Class Teacher - Mrs Williams

Welcome to Oak Class!

Welcome to Oak Class and Year 6. Year 6 is an exciting time when children look forward to many jobs and responsibilities given to them such as helping out in assemblies and at lunchtimes in other classes. House Captains are elected by all junior children each autumn and they are then able to choose children for House Sports Competitions and show visitors around the school.

Many other things are special to Year 6 each year such as the PGL residential trip, annual awards, Year 6 Taster Days at local secondary schools, ‘Technology and Music Days’ and Bikeability (cycling proficiency). We also run a Christmas Fayre as part of our PSHE ‘Budgeting & Looking after Money’ unit each year. The children work in small groups to create an enterprise business, advertise, budget, market and run a stall to make a profit. All profits are then donated to a charity chosen by the children.  We raised lots of money last year and we had lots of fun so we are very excited about the project this year!

This year, in our WWII topic, we will learn about the experiences of children and families living through war as well as reading our class book, Goodnight Mr Tom. We will look at rationing, the effects of the Blitz as well as the rise of Hitler and anti-Semitism. In the spring we move to South America where we will explore the significance of South American Fairtrade products and go back in time to the Mayan Aztecs. We will study Pompeii, the causes and effects, as well as more recent natural disasters around the world in the summer term.

We are all looking forward to a hardworking but fun year!
