Elm Year 5

Welcome to Elm Class . We are a year five class taught by Mrs Thompson (Class Teacher) and Teaching Assistants Mrs Routh (On Mondays) and Mrs Taylor (Tuesday – Fridays).

In Elm Class, learning is fun and exciting.

What do we do?

Each term’s work is focused around a topic. Have you ever thought about the area where you live? What was it like 100 or 200 years ago? If you were alive then, what would you be like? What has changed? What has stayed the same?

Our autumn topic ‘A Local Study’ attempts to investigate and answer some of these intriguing questions.  We take on the role of detectives to find clues about life in our village many years ago. After half term, we switch our focus slightly to the First World War to find out what happened to the young men of our village.

In the spring term, we are going to be doing a new topic (linked to science and history)  all based around chocolate – watch this space!

In our geography based topic in the summer term, we compare the features of our local town, Boston, with Boston in the USA.  We find out about the significance of our area in the founding of the USA.

In Elm class, we love our science. In the autumn term, we are blown away by facts about Earth and Space.  We investigate forces by conducting experiments.   We enjoy our chemistry focus on materials in the spring term – especially observing chemical reactions.   We love designing  and  making our own  bread in the summer term.

Maths and English.

In maths, we like to learn in lots of different ways. Sometimes we learn through games and activities; sometimes we work together on an investigation and sometimes we just have to try and work things out for ourselves.  We like our English work to fit in with our topic to help bring it even more alive.

What other exciting things do we do in Elm Class?

At Christmas, we join with Oak class to organise a Christmas fair in aid of local charities. We have great fun organising our stalls with the budget we are given, working hard to set up and run the stalls.

The highlight of the summer term is the 5/6 production.  Our production is chosen, with catchy songs and a comedy script.  It is hard work but great fun on the night.

We have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of lunchtime and after school clubs which help our enjoyment of learning.
